The Nigerian Players Union will host its inaugural congress, providing a forum for players participating in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) this coming weekend.
Their goal is to ensure equal representation and a unified voice regarding players’ welfare, development, and professionalism.
Austin Popo, a member of the players’ status subcommittee of the NFF, highlighted that player-delegates will participate in debates on their general welfare and decision-making processes, as well as explore ways to improve the league’s quality.
“This is the very first time the union will be organizing a congress that is made up of club captains from the NPFL, the Nigerian Women’s Football League, the NNL, and the NLO,” said Popo. “They will be meeting to ratify decisions and structures established over the past year.”
”For the past one year, current players have to come together to make sure that they are in control of the players’ chamber, having what is known as the players’ board, made up of club captains that go across the league.”
The congress will feature representatives such as Abi Sonde, the captain of Sunshine, serving as the chairman of the players’ board, with Gobeleja as vice-chairman, along with other club captains, including female club captains.
