Sand Eagles Lose Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles put up a strong fight but ultimately lost to Mauritania, who secured a 6-5 victory on the away goal rule to qualify for this year’s Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations.

The match took place at the Beach Soccer Arena, Murtala Muhammed Square, Kaduna.

A last-minute penalty awarded by Mozambican referee Dique Salvador Muxanga, which Mauritania converted to clinch the win.

The aggregate score stood at 10-10, but Mauritania advanced due to scoring more away goals.

Trailing 4-5 from the first leg in Nouakchott, Mauritania opened the scoring early. Taiwo Adams, who scored in the first leg, quickly equalized for Nigeria.

Mauritania regained the lead early in the second period, but Hassan Abdullahi equalized for Nigeria with a direct kick.

The visitors then pulled ahead with two more goals before the second period ended.

In the final period, Adams scored again to reduce the deficit.

Although Mauritania extended their lead with another penalty, Nigeria responded with two goals in the closing stages, leveling the score at 5-5. However, a last-minute penalty allowed Mauritania to secure the victory.

With this win, Mauritania joins hosts Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, and four other teams in the 8-Nation finals in December.
