Onuachu Returns to Southampton for Pre-Season

Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu has rejoined Southampton for pre-season training, but his future at the club remains in doubt.

Southampton manager Russell Martin expressed his satisfaction at having Onuachu back in the squad but acknowledged uncertainty regarding the striker’s long-term prospects with the team.

Onuachu spent the previous season on loan at Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, where he impressed by scoring 17 goals in 25 appearances.

Trabzonspor is keen to retain the prolific forward, casting doubt over his future with Southampton.

Speaking to the Southampton Echo, Martin hinted that a permanent move away from the Saints is likely for Onuachu this summer.

“Paul is back now with us after a bit of an extended break,” Martin said.

“He had a brilliant season in Turkey, at a club that has a lot of affection for him now. So, we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Nigeria international joined Southampton in January 2023 but struggled to make an impact, failing to score in his 11 appearances for the club.
