The management and board of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) have released the first round of fixtures for the 2024/25 season at their Annual General Meeting, in Abuja.
The new season is set to kick off on either August 31st or September 1st, 2024.
Speaking after the meeting, Okey Kpalukwu, the chairman of NPFL club owners and Rivers United, addressed the issue on the importance of starting the league early to avoid fixture congestion.
He stated:
“We have agreed to commence this league on 31st of August. That is quite early enough. Believing that the matches that will be scheduled will be located between the midweek and then it will be played.”
Kpalukwu also discussed the benefits of this early start for teams participating in continental competitions and the Federation Cup:
“Starting the league season early would help teams on the continent and in the Federation Cup. Playing our matches for four, five weeks, weekend, midweek, wasn’t acceptable at all. It gave us a lot of stress.”
By beginning the season early, the NPFL aims to create a more manageable schedule for clubs, reducing the strain and allowing for better performance in both domestic and international competitions.
