England’s long wait for a major tournament victory continues after Spain defeated them in the Euro 2024 final, lifting the trophy in Berlin.
After a goalless first half, Nico Williams gave Spain the lead three minutes into the second half with a beautiful finish.
Spain dominated possession throughout the match, creating numerous chances but failing to convert until England pulled one back when Jude Bellingham laid off a pass to Cole Palmer, who sent a low shot past Unai Simon to level the score.
Hopes for extra time were dashed when Mikel Oyarzabal scored in the 86th minute after a pass from Marc Cucurella, making it 2-1.
Dani Olmo’s crucial save in the dying minutes kept Spain in the lead, sealing their victory.
Euro 2024 showcased the significant impact of players with African roots, continuing a legacy that dates back to the year 90s.
This tournament highlighted their instrumental roles in their respective teams.
Notable players like Jamal Musiala, Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Kylian Mbappe, Manuel Obafemi Akanji, and Bukayo Saka stood out throughout the tournament.
But taking a look at the final in recent years the African players has been phenomenal.
In the Euro 2024 final Nico Williams opened the scoring for Spain in the final in their 2-1 win over England.
His performance throughout the tournament has earned him a potential move to Catalan giants Barcelona.
Williams won Man of the Match against Italy, impressing fans and leaving defenders chasing shadows. He also shone in the Round of 16 against Georgia with his power, speed, and finesse.
Lamine Yamal was another key figure for Spain, providing the assist for Williams’ goal in the final. With four assists and a goal throughout the tournament, he was named the Young Player of the Tournament.
The 17-year-old is being tipped to attain greatness following in the footsteps of the great Lionel Messi.
Spanish fans praised his brilliant future and the impressive contributions of both Williams and Yamal.
“Yamal is a very young player with a brilliant future,” a Spanish fan said.
“Nico Williams is an elite baller, the best winger in the world,” another supporter said.
“Lamine Yamal is the youngest player in history to win Euros at 16 years. The future of football is in great hands.”
Another said “Lamine Yamal Surpassed Ronaldo’s international legacy in Just 6 games” another fan noted.
Kobbie Mainoo also made his Euro debut for England. The 19-year-old Manchester United midfielder whose parents are Ghanaian, had a promising start, showing potential for future tournaments.
He became the youngest England player to feature in a semi-final at a major tournament, produced a sublime performance against Netherlands that defied his 19 years age.
“I think all of his performances have been exceptional, especially when you consider his age. We haven’t really had a player like him until now,” Southgate had said
Bukayo Saka also had a good tournament, leading England to the final. Despite missing a penalty in the 2021 final shootout, Saka was instrumental in England’s journey, scoring the crucial equalizer and a spot-kick in the shootout win over Switzerland.
Saka’s parents hail from Nigeria, and he has often identified with his Nigerian heritage.
“You can fail once but you have a choice whether you put yourself in that position again or not. I’m a guy who is going to put myself in that position. I believed in myself.” said a jubilant Saka after his penalty had helped England to the semi-finals.
Saka also adjusted well throughout the tournament, demonstrating his versatility by being deployed in various positions as needed.
