Onuachu Return to Southampton Unlikely

Newly promoted to the English Premier League, Southampton reportedly do not have Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu in their plans for the upcoming season.

Southampton defeated Leeds United 1-0 in the playoffs to secure promotion back to the English Premier after a one-year exile in the Championship.

According to GMS, Southampton’s head coach Martin Russell does not have plans to include Onuachu in his squad moving forward.

Due to concerns about his playing time, Onuachu left Southampton for Turkish side Trabzonspor last summer on a season-long loan which proved profitable for the 30-year-old striker, as he became fan favorite with his impressive goal-scoring abilities.

He netted 17 goals and provided four assists in 26 appearances for Trabzonspor, proven crucial in them securing a third-place finish in the Super Lig.

Onuachu’s agent, Resat Can Ozbudak, had disclosed that the striker does not wish to return to Southampton, although the club is demanding €11 million for his transfer, which could be a hurdle for Trabzonspor.

“We will meet and talk with Paul soon,” Ozbudak told Sports Digitale. “He wants Trabzonspor. He loves Turkey. He does not want to go back to England.”

“We are waiting for Southampton, because they need to reach an agreement with Southampton regarding loan or transfer.”

If Onuachu remains with Trabzonspor, he will participate in next season’s UEFA Europa League following their third-place finish in the Turkish league.
