Nigerian sprint sensation Tobi Amusan has expressed confidence in the nation’s athletes as they gear up for the Confederation of African Seniors Athletics Championship commence in Douala.
The Nigerian contingent arrived in Douala on Thursday, preparing for the week-long event.
The team is heading into the championship on the heels of the National Athletic Championship, which also served as the national trials for the upcoming Olympic Games.
Amusan said, “We are Nigerians, and our aim is to show that spirit of ‘we can do it,'” she stated.
“It’s a national assignment. No one is bigger than the country, and it’s my obligation to be here.”
Team Nigeria comprises 40 athletes, evenly split between 20 male and 20 female competitors, who will participate in 20 events over the course of the championship.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Emeka Jeffery made an impressive start in the men’s Decathlon.
Jeffery has already competed in two events—the 100m and the Long Jump—securing top 3 finishes in both.
In the Long Jump, Jeffery nearly matched his personal best of 7.16 meters, finishing third with a mark of 7.15 meters.
His strong performances have set a positive tone for Nigeria’s participation in the championships.
