As the FIFA World Cup qualifiers heat up, Rwanda’s national football team finds itself leading the Group C.
In an interview with Brila.net, head coach Torsten Frank Spittler spoke about what World Cup qualification would mean for Rwanda, describing it as both a dream and a miracle.
“It would be a dream and in the same way, it would be a miracle if we would really go to the World Cup,” Spittler remarked.
“At the moment, I have to say, we have to enjoy the situation at the moment as we are topping the group, but this can change very quickly,” he noted on the challenges ahead.
Spittler pointed out the competitive nature of their group and acknowledged the threat posed by Nigeria, which trails closely.
“We have three teams with equal points, and I for sure will not forget Nigeria. They are not too far away and can still pick up again,” he said.
“These weaker teams don’t have the stability to stay on this high level or on this ranking position,” Spittler explained.
He highlighted the vulnerability of his team, noting, “There can easily happen something because there are not too many players in the team that, if something happens, can replace players.”
Rwanda has never qualified for the World Cup, unlike their neighbors Angola, who made it to the tournament in 2006.
Currently, Rwanda is tied for the top spot in Group C with South Africa and Benin Republic, each holding seven points.
