Benin Republic defeated Nigeria 2-1 in Abidjan, in their 2026 World Cup Qualifying match on Monday.
This historic loss marks the second time Nigeria’s senior team has been defeated by Benin Republic, and it came under the guidance of their former head coach, Gernot Rohr.
Nigeria started the clash strongly, with Raphael Onyedika giving them the lead in the 27th minute.
However, the game turned when Jodel Dossou equalized for the hosts following a defensive error by Calvin Bassey.
In the third minute of added time in the first half (43+3), Steve Mounié scored the winning goal from a corner kick, capitalizing on another defensive lapse by the Super Eagles.
This defeat leaves Nigeria 5th in group C, with 3 points, having secured three draws.
Benin Republic, on the other hand, now top the table with 7 points, boasting two wins, one loss, and one draw.
The result hands a setback for Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
