Nwabali Welcomes Maduka Okoye, Competition for Super Eagles’ No. 1 Spot
46
Stanley Nwabali has expressed his confidence in maintaining the Super Eagles first choice goalkeeping spot.
Nwabali, secured the starting position following Okoye’s temporary departure from the team and Francis Uzoho’s struggle with form.
The Chippa United’s goalkeeper kept four clean sheets as the Super Eagles finished second at the last Africa Cup of Nations.
However, Okoye has now returned to the squad, following impressive performances for Udinese during the 2023/24 season, signaling a potential challenge for the top spot.
Despite the impending competition, Nwabali remains unfazed, emphasizing that healthy rivalry among players will only enhance the team’s overall performance.
He stated that the pressure to retain his position serves as motivation to elevate his game.
“I’m not under pressure. Maduka is a very good goalkeeper to be honest. This will be my first time working with him,” Nwabali told the Super Eagles media.
“His presence is going to motivate everyone to do well. Having him around will bring out the best in all of us. It is good when we have quality goalkeepers in the team.
“He has really done well at his club this season which is good for the team.”‘
With Okoye’s resurgence, the battle for the Super Eagles’ goalkeeper position promises to intensify, with both players poised to prove their worth.
