Ahead of crucial Olympic qualifier, the South Africa WNT head coach Desiree Ellis expects a very balanced game against Nigeria.

Despite Nigeria’s historical dominance over the reigning African champions, the Super Falcons have struggled to secure an Olympic berth for 16 years.

The initial match is slated for Abuja at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on April 5, and South Africa will host the return fixture at the Loftus Stadium four days later.

In an interview with SABC Sport, Ellis underscored the strategic advantage of Loftus Stadium’s high altitude.

She also referenced a recent milestone for the team defeating Nigeria in an invitational tournamnt in 2023.

“We looked at the altitude, we have to make sure that we take advantage of that and hopefully it can help us especially within the first 15 to 20 minutes into the game,” the Banyana Banyana coach said.

“I think our biggest turning point was the Aisha Buhari Cup and some of our key players were not available for that fixture, but with the type of football we played – belief set in, and this shows that this team is not afraid of anyone.

“So, all of us know what a big game it is, having missed the 2020 Olympics same with Nigeria, but now who wants it the most?”

The outcome of the impending showdown between South Africa and Nigeria will determine placement in a group alongside world champions Spain, Brazil, and Japan in Paris.
