Finidi George Debuts as Super Eagles Coach with Top Stars

Super Eagles interim coach, Finidi George is set to take the reins in his first game in charge of the team when Nigeria battles Ghana and Mali in back to back international friendlies this month.

The Nigeria Football Federation has officially confirmed Finidi’s appointment.

Having previously served as the assistant coach to Jose Peseiro, the former Winger who earned 44 caos for Nigeria brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role.

Additionally, he boasts a successful stint as the head coach of Enyimba FC, with whom he won the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) title last term.

However, the Gaffer will have to contend with the absence of key strikers Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi, who have been ruled out of the upcoming matches.

While Osimhen is being exempted as a precaution following a recent injury concern, Awoniyi suffered a relapse from a previous injury and both players missed their respective club’s last League matches.

Yet in their absence, Cyriel Dessers will get the chance to get again stake a claim for a regular spot in the team.

Dessers was dropped from the final squad to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was equally overlooked for a place at the Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The March 22nd clash against Ghana will be Finidi George’s first official game as head coach and he’d become the 7th former Eagles player who returned as Manager of the team.

He follows in the steps of Christian Chukwu, Augustine Eguavoen, Stephen Keshi, Daniel Amokachi, Samson Siasia and Sunday Oliseh.
