Super Falcons now among the top teams in the world — Waldrum

Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum believes that Nigeria should be considered among the top countries in women’s football based on their performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Despite being eliminated by England in the round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the team’s efforts have left a positive impression.

The Super Falcons exited the tournament unbeaten in the regulation time, despite playing against England, Canada, Republic of Ireland and co-hosts Australia.

Nigeria’s achievement in progressing to knock out stage of the tournament, even as the least ranked team in their group, has been noteworthy.

Waldrum praised his players’ character and their ability to defy the odds during the tournament.

“We can be and should be probably one of the top teams in the world by going from 40 on the FIFA rankings to a better number.

“I think we have also shown we are capable of playing against anybody. What you saw was England having a little more experience in playing these kinds of matches, being able to play with a man down and managing the game. Maybe that’s where we fell short,” Waldrum said after the game.

Nigeria lost to England 4-2 on penalties, despite having a player advantage following the sending off of Lauren James, who was shown a straight red for stamping on Michelle Alozie.
