With less than three weeks to kick off of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, all is not well in the camp of the Super Falcons.
The Falcons’ players and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are currently at loggerheads over bonuses for the tournament.
BRL gathers the players are unhappy with the decision of the NFF to cancel their match bonuses for the competition.
The reports are that the NFF ‘believes it is unnecessary to pay the players match bonuses since FIFA had announced every player would get at least $30,000 for making it to Australia and New Zealand.’
The FA’s argument is that all FIFA has done is specify the amount that must go to players from that overall prize purse to ensure that every player at the tournament is paid.
However, the overall pool of money available to Federations and players has risen significantly, from $30m to $110m.
The players however are disappointed and frustrated the NFF is using the FIFA’s individual fees as an excuse to avoid paying them bonuses for their work at the tournament.
Hence, the team is considering several options including boycotting the opening game against Canada.
BRL understand the players feel they need to take a stand, despite being made to feel like the FA owes them nothing.
