Nigeria’s Chuba Akpom is set to win this year’s Championship Golden Boot, following his sterling streak for Middlesbrough.
The striker scored his 26th league goal of the season against Burnley over the weekend, putting him seven clear of closest challenger, Coventry City’s Viktor Gyökeres, with six round of games left to play.
Akpom is also running for the Championship player of the year award, following a return of 26 goals in 33 matches for Middlesbrough.
His average goal comes in at 0.78 goals per game. Based on that figure, he will score five more and match Ivan Toney’s 31 goal haul the year before.
At the moment, only Erling Haaland has more goals than Akpom across all English leagues (26 goals, 33 appearances).
Erling Haaland has 28 goals for Manchester City, two more than Akpom who is leading third placed Andy Cook with three goals and four more than Jonson Clarke-Harris and Harry Kane in joint fourth.
The Arsenal academy graduate, now 27, has scored 13 goals in his last 12 matches and it is safe to say, he’ll score more goals and is favorite for the Championship top individual award.
