Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi believes the poor playing surface of the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, made life difficult for the team against Guinea-Bissau.
Nigeria’s last three home games have been hosted in the Abuja Stadium and the results have not been convincing; 1-1 draw with Ghana, 2-1 win over Sierra Leone, 1-0 to Guinea-Bissau.
The manner of the defeat against Guinea-Bissau came as a rude shock to fans and the team, as the Eagles struggled to stamp their authority against a lowly rated opponent, despite playing at home.
Jose Peseiro’s side however reacted and won the second leg at the Estadio 24 de Setembro on Monday.
But in his reactions, Alex Iwobi stated that the state of playing turf in Abuja is making life difficult for Super Eagles.
“If we had that in Nigeria, I feel like it would be difficult to beat us. I am confident enough to say that not many teams can beat us,” Iwobi said in an interview with The Beautiful Game Podcast.
“Having a good pitch, if we have that, I feel like we’d be unstoppable. Just a pitch with grass, no crops,” The Everton midfielder said.
