Genk’s Director of football Dimitri De Conde said the club is happy to allow Paul Onuachu join Premier League side Southampton.
Onuachu made no secret about his desire to leave the club following his incredible run of goals.
However the club stopped him countless times, before finally allowing him to leave for Southampton in this January window after accepting £18m bid.
The lanky Nigerian arrived Genk in the summer of 2019, and netted 84 goals in 134 official matches.
In the 2020-2021 season he guided Genk to a cup win and, with a record 33 goals, he received the Golden Shoe as the best player on the Belgian fields.
“It was no secret that Onuachu had long dreamed of playing in the Premier League. The club no longer wanted to deny him that dream.
“He reiterated that dream today during a long conversation. We could no longer stop him from making his dream come true. I am pleased that Paul is also grateful to the club for that,” said Head of Football Dimitri de Condé.
“His departure is of course a great loss for our current selection. We shouldn’t be silly about that. But we were prepared for a possible departure,” de Condé stated.
