How will Nigeria play at the World Cup in Russia?
Super Eagles technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has hinted he may stick with the 3-5-2 formation that engineered the 4-2 victory against Argentina in the international friendly played last year.
Rohr’s experimentation was a massive shift from what is traditional to the team [ 4-4-2 , 4-3-3 or 4-5-1] and it worked against the Albiceleste.
In a chat with brila.net former Super Eagles captain and Coach, Austin Eguavoen suggested Nigeria should stick with the 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 formation urging Rohr to “adapt”.
On Brila fm’s Big Sports Breakfast Show, former players Waidi Akanni and Ifeanyi Udeze also backed Eguavoen’s position arguing that the 3-5-2 formation could prove problematic.
Akanni, who was also a former Lagos FA chief, insists the 3-5-2 is not a trusted style of play particularly if the team lacks the personnel to execute.
He identified the struggles of EPL side Chelsea as a case in point.
‘I don’t fancy teh 3-5-2 formation becasue it has a lot of loopholes. Game formations are based on the quality of personnel you have, in this case I just think the problems associated with this style outnumbers the gains.
‘Look at Chelsea. Last season they won the league but a few months down the line they are struggling with the same formation,’ Akanni argued.
