President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau remains optimistic of Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a disappointing start to the qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles have managed to collect only three points from their first four matches, placing them fifth in Group C, four points adrift of joint leaders Benin Republic and South Africa.

To keep their World Cup hopes alive, the Super Eagles must win all six of their remaining matches.

Gusau acknowledged the current challenges faced by Nigerian football but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to turn things around.

He emphasized ongoing efforts, in collaboration with the Sports Minister, to implement comprehensive changes aimed at improving the team’s performance.

“This is a very sad moment for Nigerian football and we cannot run away from that,” Gusau told reporters.

“What I can assure you is that we’re working tirelessly with the Sports Minister to make sure we take some holistic measures that will change the entire system. It’s still possible [to qualify for the World Cup] and we’re going to make it.”

Musa Gusau spoke after he met with the members of the NFF executive committee to determine the way forward for the Super Eagles amidst what has been a disastrous World Cup qualifiers campaign so far.

The executive committee agreed to bringing an expatriate on board in the role of a technical adviser for the team.
