Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday, extending their winless streak to four games.

The Super Eagles, desperate for a victory to reignite their campaign faced their former coach Gernot Rohr and Benin Republic, in a crucial encounter.

Nigeria took an early lead in the 27th minute when Raphael Onyedika scored a stunning goal.

However, Benin Republic equalized eight minutes later, capitalizing on a reckless clearance attempt by Calvin Bassey.

Jodel Dossou pounced on the opportunity, beating goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for Benin’s fourth ever goal against their more illustrious neighbors.

The decisive moment came late in the first half when an unmarked Steve Mounie fired into an empty net after another poor defending from a set piece, securing a massive victory for Benin Republic — their second ever against Nigeria.

With this loss, Nigeria remains winless after four matches in the qualifiers and currently sits in fifth place in Group C, just above Zimbabwe, who have a game in hand.
