South Africa MNT head coach, Hugo Broos has unveiled his 23-man squad to face Nigeria and Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Initially, Broos selected a 36-man preliminary squad before trimming it down to the final 23.
Bafana Bafana currently sit in second place in Group C with three points from two games.
South Africa’s 23-Man Squad:

Çaykur Rizespor midfielder Olawoyin Ibrahim has earned his first call-up to the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles announced that Bayer Leverkusen star Nathan Tella has excused himself from the qualifiers against South Africa and Benin due to family reasons.
Tella made history with Bayer Leverkusen by winning the German Bundesliga without losing a game and also securing the DFB-Pokal.
Olawoyin has scored 8 goals and provided 3 assists in 36 appearances for Çaykur Rizespor in the Turkish Super Lig this season.
His inclusion, the number of new call-ups in the Super Eagles squad is now three.
Nigeria will host South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on June 7, before facing Benin Republic at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on June 10.

Rivers Hoopers head coach, Ogoh Odaudu remains determined as his team prepares for the bronze medal match in the 2024 Basketball Africa League (BAL).
Despite a hard-fought 89-83 semi final defeat to Al Ahly Ly on Wednesday in Kigali, Odaudu is setting his sights on securing third place finish.
“It’s quite unfortunate the fairytale run has ended.”
Rivers Hoopers compiled an impressive 5-3 record leading up to the semi-final.
Their notable journey included a quarter-final victory over the 2022 champions US Monastir which bolstered their reputation and confidence.
Reflecting on the semi-final loss, a disappointed but resolute Odaudu expressed his intent to rebound and aim for the bronze medal against the Cape Town Tigers on Friday.
“Nobody gave us a chance, but we will raise our heads high. Nobody thought we would be here today, and here we are.
“It’s quite unfortunate the fairytale run has ended. We will try and make sure we come back and take the bronze medal game.”
Next on the plate of the Nigerian champions is the Cape Town Tigers. The South African side lost to Petro de Luanda 96-86 as the Angolans advance to the BAL final for the second time.

Flamingos head coach, Bankole Olowookere has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness as they prepare to face Liberia Women’s Under-17 team in the final World Cup qualifying round on June 19th.
“World Cup is sweet, because I’ve tasted it and I want to be there again.”
The primary objective for Olowookere and his team is to secure a place at the World Cup, and he insists that there is no pressure on the squad.
Speaking about the team’s mission in a chat with Brila.net, Olowookere outlined the clear stages they have set for their World Cup journey.
“As usual, we are prepared, it’s a mission that we’ve embarked on,” said the Flamingos Coach. “And the destination is for first, there’s three stages associated.”
“One is for us to get the ticket from Africa to qualify for the World Cup. And then the other stage is for us to try and equal the record of what we had in the last edition. And then the third one, we work hard to surpass the last edition.
“So we need to first of all get the first stage done.”
Olowookere highlighted the importance of the home leg and expressed the team’s excitement and eagerness to compete at the World Cup again.
“So 90 minutes away, 90 minutes at home. But for how good that there’s any pressure on us, neither from the federation or anybody.
“Any other pressure is to be our eagerness. Both the players and myself, because World Cup is sweet, because I’ve tasted it and I want to be there again.
“So a lot of things speaks for the World Cup itself. So also I’ve told the story of the World Cup to those girls and they are eager to experience as well.”
He also acknowledged the tough journey the team has faced to reach this point and emphasized their continued hard work and determination.
“So coming to this level that we are, we are working hard to make sure that we get that coordination.”

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has initiated a training camp in Yenagoa in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games.
“We have a mandate to ensure that we strive for podium finishes.”
NWF President Daniel Igali emphasized the importance of this camp in ensuring the athletes’ optimal performance at the Olympics.
“We have a mandate to ensure that we strive for podium finishes at the Olympics, that’s reason enough to put all machinery in place for optimum performance,” stated Igali.
Nigeria will be represented by six wrestlers at the Paris 2024 Games, comprising one male and five females.
The athletes include Blessing Oborodudu (68kg), Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg), Ogunsanya Christinah (53kg), Esther Kolawole (62kg), and Ashton Mutuwa (125kg).
Earlier this month, the NWF also sponsored a two-week camp for the wrestlers prior to Mercy Genesis’ participation in the World Wrestling Olympic qualifier in Istanbul, Turkey, further demonstrating their commitment to thorough preparation.

Former Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Omatseye Nesiama has called for more efforts toward improving Athletes’ welfare ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris.
“Qualifying is one thing, but being in top shape to deliver during the Games is another.” – Nesiama.
Nesiama makes a point about ensuring that the relevant bodies help Nigerian Athletes reach peak performance levels heading into tournaments.
“These athletes, especially the professional ones, need to make money and compete, but if they’re not carefully managed, they risk burning out at the crucial time,” he told Brila.net.
“We need to provide alternatives for them and also focus on their nutrition and medical care.”
“Some athletes are injured or slightly injured. We need to ensure they receive the right attention and treatment to prepare them and keep them in shape for the Olympics.
“Qualifying is one thing, but being in top shape to deliver during the Games is another.”
“We need all hands on deck to treat our athletes as valuable assets that require proper maintenance and nurturing to deliver at the right time, particularly during the Olympics.”

The Super Eagles are set to resume camp in Uyo next Monday in preparation for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures against South Africa and Benin Republic.
All 23 invited players, along with the coaching staff, are expected to arrive on the same day to begin their training sessions.
Under the leadership of coach Finidi George, the team will host South Africa in Uyo on Friday, June 7.
Following this, they will travel to Abidjan to face Benin Republic Squirrels three days later.
Standing third in Group C with two draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, Finidi will be aiming to secure Nigeria’s first win in the qualifiers.

In preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Super Falcons will undergo training in Spain, as confirmed by NFF sources.
Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has suggested three European countries to the Federation for the camp, including Spain, Belgium, and Portugal.
After the team secured qualification, Waldrum submitted his proposed program with Spain emerging as the preferred choice for the NFF.
The decision was influenced by Spain’s climate which is similar to that of France, where the Olympic tournament will be held.
Meanwhile, the team is slated to camp in Spain from July 5 to 16, with plans to engage in a friendly match during their stay.
Nigeria is in Group C which also has World champions Spain, Japan, and Brazil.
The former African Champions will kick off their campaign against Brazil at Stade de Bordeaux on July 25, followed by matches against Spain in Nantes three days later and Japan on July 31, also in Nantes.

Ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, Super Eagles head coach Finidi George is facing the possibility of making several adjustments to his squad due to injuries.
Sources have revealed that midfielders Frank Onyeka and Samuel Chukwueze are grappling with fitness concerns, while Nathan Tella may need to withdraw due to personal reasons.
Earlier this week, Finidi was compelled to replace Victor Osimhen with Kenneth Igboke after the Napoli striker withdrew from the squad.
To address these potential setbacks, the coach is considering summoning players from the NPFL as replacements.
Nigeria will gear up to confront South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, June 7.
