The 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) season begins today with reigning champions Edo Queens hosting Abia Angels in the star match at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The match is one of eight fixtures scheduled across two groups, promising an exciting start to the campaign.
Edo Queens Begin Title Defense
Edo Queens, led by coach Moses Aduku, enter the new season brimming with confidence after clinching their first league title in May during the Super 6 tournament in Bayelsa.
Their subsequent CAF Women’s Champions League appearance in Morocco, where they finished fourth, has further bolstered their experience.
This season, the Queens face a fresh challenge as they aim to dominate Group A before eyeing potential clashes against former champions Rivers Angels and Delta Queens in the title race.

Rivers Angels’ New Signings Raise Expectations
Seven-time champions, Rivers Angels have bolstered their squad with 14 new signings, including Flamingos captain Taiwo Afolabi, who joined from Delta Queens, and debutant goalkeeper, Fatima Oloko.
Oloko has already captured attention with her confidence and determination to perform.
Speaking about her journey, Oloko said:
“I chose goalkeeping because I feel at peace doing it. I feel at home between the goalpost. Determination has been the key. I was once discouraged, but I stayed focused.”
Emerging Talent at Remo Stars Ladies
Remo Stars Ladies also generated buzz with the signing of UNILAG student Subomi Ogundele.
The forward is set to make her professional debut after shining in university competitions, including the NUGA Games, where she was named MVP and top scorer.
