2023 AFCON: Super Eagles Easily The Best Team On Paper

Nigeria is a football powerhouse in Africa and the Super Eagles are setting their sights on clinching a fourth Africa
Cup of Nations title as they gear up for the upcoming tournament in Ivory Coast.

The three-time champions find themselves in a difficult group stage alongside Equatorial Guinea, host nation Ivory Coast, and Guinea-Bissau at AFCON.

Despite being considered pre-tournament favorites, Peseiro’s side faces a daunting task to ensure they are in optimal form when the competition kicks off on January 13, 2023.

The team has not reached the final since their triumphant victory in 2013 and is currently grappling with form issues, having drawn 1-1 in their first two 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe last month.

“We know that we’ve been underperforming, We’ve got easily the best team on paper,” Calvin Bassey Bassey told The Athletic.

Bassey is banking on newly crowned African player of the year, Victor Osimhen’s prowess to guide them to the final scheduled for February 11.

“He (Victor Osimhen) is a joke — the only striker I know who can run a back line by himself. He can run in behind, he can head, finish, he can do everything.”

Victor Osimhen, has an impressive record of 20 goals in 27 caps for Nigeria.
