Manchester United’s top-four hopes have suffered a blow with a 2-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers while Fulham’s relegation from the Premier League was made official by a 4-1 thumping at Watford.
Chris Smalling’s 77th-minute own goal gave Wolves victory over 10-man United, who had Ashley Young sent off on 57 minutes at Molineux.
The visitors started well but wasted a number of chances either side of Scott McTominay’s superb first goal for the club on 13 minutes, allowing Diogo Jota to level on 25 minutes.
Ashley Young became the recipient of Mike Dean’s 100th Premier League red card before Chris Smalling’s own goal in the 77th minute sealed the comeback win for Wolves.
The defeat left United fifth in the table on goal difference behind Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand, while Wolves are seventh.
The result also gave them plenty to ponder before next week’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Barcelona.
“We created our own downfall really … But for their keeper, we should have won this game,” rued Solskjaer.
Meanwhile, Fulham has been relegated after they collapsed at Vicarage Road, a defeat that left them 16 points adrift of the safety zone with five games remaining.
