Former Reading defender Sam Sodje calls for Nigeria’s ‘defensive coach’
Former Nigeria international Sam Sodje has said the Super Eagles should get a defensive coach to work with Gernot Rohr if they want to excel at the 2019 AFCON tournament holding in Egypt.
Nigeria Women’s Football League chief, Aisha Falode has suggested the Super Falcons will be expected to do well in France having been provided one of the most thorough preparations for a World Cup like their male counterparts.
With invitational tournaments in China, Cyprus and a few more when the team head out to Spain for their pre tournament camp, the Falcons would have had their best world cup preparation since 1991.
Falode told brila.net the NFF is providing a level playing field for the women as it has done with the men over the years.
‘We know they’ve had preparations like never before in the weeks and months going to the World Cup proper.
‘They’ve gone to an invitational in China, they’ve gone to Cyprus, they’re preparing to go to Spain to play some friendlies after which they go to their camp in Austria to also play friendlies; so the preparation is as thorough as the men.
‘So we must give kudos to the leadership of the Nigeria football federation, because they’ll know now that Women’s football deserve to have the same kind of attention, the same kind of playing field. We deserve all the incentives that you give to the men for good performance.’
Moses, Onyekuru, Ighalo on target as Eagles beat Seychelles 3-1 in Asaba
The Super Eagles of Nigeria rounded up their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a home 3-1 win over Seychelles in Asaba on Friday evening.
41 – The Pirates of Seychelles have equalized against the Super Eagles after Odion Ighalo’s spot kick.
Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr will unleash his best legs, as a high-score win would put the Eagles in a good and great mood for Tuesday’s international friendly against seven-time champions, Egypt.
Missing out in 2012 appeared at the time to be a blip, having finished at least third in five of the six previous tournaments, and they roared back from that disappointment to lift the trophy in South Africa one year later.
However, the Super Eagles have been notable absentees for the past two editions and will no doubt be looking to make up for lost time when this summer’s tournament gets underway in Egypt.
Meanwhile, Seychelles have by far the worst defensive record in qualifying, though, while only two teams have scored more goals than Nigeria – one of whom is Libya following their eight-goal haul.
Things look bleak for the Pirates, then, and it would take an almighty shock for them to end what is now a 20-match winless run away to the three-time African champions.
Seychelles are closing in on three years since their last win of any kind – against Lesotho in March 2016 – losing 15 and drawing five of their outings since then.
