Christian Chukwu wants Rohr to invite new players for 2019 AFCON preparations
Former Super Eagles manager and player, Christian Chukwu has called on coach of the national team, Gernot Rohr to include new faces into his team as he prepares for the AFCON 2019 in Egypt.
Chukwu said although he strongly believes Rohr is keen to present Nigeria’s best team at the 2019 Nations cup, new faces should be invited so that they can battle for places in the team.
In a chat with www.brila.net, Chukwu believes such a move will give every Nigerian player in top form opportunity to fight for a chance in the squad to the Nations Cup in Egypt.
“Lets see how they perform in the friendleies, I hope more new players will come in, it will create a good atmosphere for players to fight for the jersey”.
“He can also get the best players on the bench, the reserves. its not just about the starting 11. The reserves are also as important”.
The former Gabon gaffer confirmed that program for the tournament has been submitted since the qualifications for the tournament was confirmed in November, with changes expected after Egypt were announced as the nbew hosts of the competition, with Cameroun being stripped due to their unreadiness by CAF.
Former Super Eagles goalkeepers’ trainer, Joe Erico has advised Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr to do everything he can and come up with a winning team for the Egypt 2019 African Nations Cup coming up later this year in the month of June.
He said the manager should mandate members of his technical team to assemble a quality team for the African tournament.
Caf team is currently conducting its first inspection mission of Egyptian facilities for the Afcon finals that kick-off on June 21 and ends on July 19.
With Egypt the first team to stage the expanded 24-team Afcon, they are in a race against time to ensure readiness for the tournament as six venues are expected to be used.
Erico, in a chat with www.brila.net, said that Rohr should be wary of the opposing teams coming for the finals as the qualifiers are a different ball game from the actual tournament.
“What should be his priority has to be getting a winning team. The qualifiers is much more different from the real business in Egypt”.
My advice to him therefore should be to make sure he gets players that can give him the much desired win, he concluded.
Qualifiers for the 2019 Afcon conclude next month, with the Super Eagles among the 14 teams having already qualified. The draw for the final will be conducted on April 12.
