Super Eagles and Wolves Goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has made the decision to retire from football after winning a battle against Cancer on medical advice.
Ikeme was diagnosed with acute leukaemia a year ago. After a prolonged treatment, he recently revealed he was in remission.
Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi said: “Having been at the club since the age of 14, Carl is far more than just a player in our eyes – he is our brother and an important part of our family.
“When Carl came to tell us his news, yes there was sadness, but also great happiness to see him so healthy and hungry for the opportunities that lay ahead of him.
“Carl is strong, a fighter, something he has proven in his playing career and also during what has been a very challenging time for him, so I have no doubt he will be a success in whatever he does next.
“We wish Carl all the very best for the future, but remind him he will always remain a part of the Wolves family.”
World Cup star Luka Modric will lead the challenge against a decade-long dominance of Fifa’s best player award by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Modric, the Croatia captain who was named the tournament’s best player, joined five-time winners Ronaldo and Messi among 10 candidates announced by Fifa on Tuesday (Wednesday NZT).
For the first time, Fifa has opened voting within days of the World Cup, where Ronaldo and Messi both exited in the round of 16.
Varane is the only defender selected by a Fifa expert panel which did not pick Brazil star Neymar. The 13-man panel included three Brazilians – former Fifa award winners Ronaldo and Kaka, and 1994 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.
Belgium, which lost to France in the semifinals, has Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard on the shortlist.
It is completed by World Cup golden boot winner Harry Kane of England and Mohamed Salah, the Egypt forward who was inspirational in Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final.
The winners announced in London on September 24 are voted by national coaches and captains, plus media from Fifa’s 211 member countries, and fans voting online.
Three finalists will be announced before the ceremony.

Super Eagles and Kano Pillars Forward Junior Lokosa has once again failed to secure a deal with after undergoing trials for the second time in Europe.
Lokosa reportedly impressed in training with the Norwegian league side SK Brann, but today it was announced he will not be offered a contract.
According to a Norway Media outfit, aftenposten.no Lokosa’s agent, Abiodun Tella claimed that his client was traveling for a routine medical before signing a straight contract but in reality, SK Brann wanted to see how the striker fitted into the squad, in terms of his personality and abilities.
”Maybe the manager wants someone who can make an impact immediately, who is used to the playing system,” the player’s agent, Tella told aftenposten.no.
The 24-year-old forward has scored 19 goals this season in the NPFL, also failed to secure a deal at Bulgarian club PFC Ludogorets before the World Cup in Russia.

Coach of Lobi stars, Solomon Ogbeide has revealed the most relevant reason the League ‘s top scorer Junior Lokosa went for trials in Norway.
The Veteran tactician said Lokosa going for trial in Norway debase the league and shows the desperation of local players when he could have simply been sought after by the same or even bigger clubs.
Lokosa left Nigeria for Norway a few days ago and reports have it that the NPFL top scorer has impressed during the training sessions in Norway.

Former WBA defender Udeze slams Lokosa over decision to go on trial in Norway
Former Super Eagles and WBA defender, Ifeanyi Udeze has criticized Kano Pillars forward Junior Lokosa over his decision to go on trial with a Norwegian Clubside.
Speaking on Brila FM‘s Sports Machine, Udeze describe the trial move as an act of desperacy from both the player and his representatives/Agents.

Udeze suggested that he wouldn’t be bordered if the trial had been with either Barcelona or Real Madrid, He feels Lokosa will not get the respect he deserves having entered the team through trials.
Lokosa was named by Coach Gernot Rohr as a member of the Super Eagles 30-man preliminary squad but was left out of the final 23.

Top stars in the team are Rasheedat Ajibade, Saheed Adebisi, Monday Gift and Ucheibe as the side prepare to do battle in Group D of the competition with Haiti, China, and Germany.
The squad is made up of three goalkeepers, six defenders, seven midfielders and five strikers.
They are presently in Austria for a 12-day training exercise ahead of the tournament and would leave for France, August 2nd.
