Belgium knock out Brazil to reach World Cup semi-finals

Belgium have beaten Brazil and will play France for a spot in the World Cup final.

 

Roberto Martinez’s side secured passage to the semi-final after beating the five-time World Cup winners 2-1 thanks to a Fernandinho own-goal, then a stunning strike from Kevin De Bruyne.

 

The Red Devils were able to see things through for just a second-ever appearance in the semis, despite being made to hold on in the final 15 minutes following a consolation header from Renato Augusto.

 

Both managers made a couple of changes to their starting lineups, with Marouane Fellaini and Nacer Chadli – key players in the 3-2 comeback win over Japan in the last round – both coming in for Belgium.

 

Fernandinho was one of the two Brazil players brought into the side, meanwhile, along with fit-again Marcelo, and it was the Manchester City midfielder who gifted the opposition a 13th-minute lead.

 

Belgium will now face France in an all-Europe semifinal.

Meanwhile, Brazil hope to secure a semifinal spot, while Belgium’s greatest generation of talent looks to move closer to a maiden World Cup trophy.

Uruguay vs France: Cavani misses out as Mbappe, Giroud start for Les Bleus

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has failed to make Uruguay’s starting XI for their Russia 2018 World Cup quarter-final against France due to injury.

 

The former Napoli striker will start on the bench for the knockout tie, with Girona’s Christian Stuani partnering Barcelona’s Luis Suarez up front in Cavani’s absence.

 

Oscar Tabarez has otherwise named an unchanged side from the 2-1 victory over Spain in the last 16, with Jose Gimenez keeping his place in defence, having fully recovered from a back problem.

 

On the other hand, France boasts a fully fit side, making only one change from their last outing against Argentina.

 

Blaise Matuidi drops to the bench, replaced by Corentin Tolisso.

 

Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann, and Kylian Mbappe will all be attempting to support Olivier Giroud, who starts up top once again.

Everton reject Leipzig’s £12m bid for Nigeria-born Ademola Lookman

English Premier League side Everton have reportedly rejected a £12 million bid for striker Ademola Lookman from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

 

After struggling for minutes during the first half of last season, Lookman spent the second half of the season in the Bundesliga with Leipzig and impressed, scoring 5 times from 11 games.

 

According to Sportlens, Leipzig may come up with another improved bid considering that the player is open to an exit.

 

The Toffees are expected to sign new players this summer as they aim to improve under new manager Marco Silva.

 

The Merseysiders are thought to want to keep Lookman on board though the player is said to be open to leaving as he wants to play regular first-team football.

CAF: Amaju Pinnick replaces Ntantakyi as new 1st Vice President

CAF has appointed NFF President Amaju Pinnick as the new 1st Vice President following the resignation of former Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi.

 

The 48-year-old resigned from his roles as a member of the FIFA Council, member of the FIFA Associations Committee, First Vice President of CAF and President of Zone B of the West African Football Union (WAFU) after the investigative piece by ace journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas on corruption in Ghana Football.

 

The former Ghana FA President was banned by FIFA being ban by FIFA for a duration of 90 days for alleged corrupt practices.

 

Amaju Pinnick was elected as the President of the Nigeria Football Federation in 2014.

 

His appointment comes amid a renewed leadership tussle within the NFF.

Injury Blow for Tite! Brazil star Danilo ruled out of World Cup

Brazil Manager Tite have been handed with some headache on his hands if the Samba boys continue their run in Russia with Danilo ruled out injured.

 

The Brazil team take on Belgium in their quarter-final clash on Friday night, hoping to take a step closer to securing a sixth World Cup triumph.

 

After seeing Dani Alves ruled out of the tournament before it began due to injury, Tite has also had to cope with the absence of Danilo after he featured in their opening game against Switzerland.

 

According to Sky Sports though, the Manchester City ace’s World Cup is over as after damaging ankle ligaments in training, he will not be able to play again in Russia and that presents a real problem for Brazil.

 

Corinthians ace Fagner has stepped in as third-choice at right-back, and although he has done a decent job, particularly in the win over Mexico last time out, it was evident that they were targeting him as he can be vulnerable defensively.
