Former Italy and AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini’s professional tennis career is likely to stop at one match after a debut he described as “like writing a poem after studying years of maths”.
Paolo Maldini made a short but sweet professional tennis debut in the Aspria Tennis Cup on Tuesday evening.
The 49-year-old, played in the doubles with his partner, Stefano Landonio, and was beaten, 6-1, 6-1 by Poland’s Tomasz Bednarek and Dutchman David Pel in the first round of the Aspria Tennis Cup in Milan on Monday.
“It was like writing a poem after studying years of maths,” said Maldini, whose appearance secured more attention than is customary for a Challenger Tour event.
“We tried to enjoy the moment, also because I didn’t expect I’d be able to experience something like this at the age of 49. Ironically, on the very first point of the match I pulled a muscle.
“It was a unique and unrepeatable experience, I have lived it as a game and there will be no other experience like this.
“We could have played better on a few points, but no problem. It could have ended 6-0 6-3, we lost 6-1 6-1 and that’s fine.”
Maldini and Landonio, who once held a world ranking of 975, were outplayed by 35-year-old Bednarek, a former top 50 player in doubles, and the 25-year-old Pel, who is currently ranked just outside the top 200.
“I want it to be clear, it’s only for fun, because I’m a member of this club and Stefano works here,” explained Maldini, one of Italy’s greatest ever footballers, a man who at left back was one of the best defenders the world has ever seen.
“I had to take it easy, especially at my age. You can be a little bit nervous, because you are doing something that is not yours. But since you’ve been a good player in another sport, you know what to expect.
“(But) those who know professional sport know very well that it’s impossible to invent yourself as a professional from one day to the next. This is something I know very well.”
Could Maldini be tempted to play again, if not at full professional level, perhaps on the ITF’s over-50 circuit?
“I would say no, especially because I don’t train like an ex-professional,” he said.
“I play once a week, I come from another sport, I have physical problems with my knees and a series of limitations due to the inevitable wear-and-tear caused by football. Also, I don’t have much time available.”
Maldini and Landonio earned their place in the draw after winning a “rodeo” tournament at the host venue, the club where the Italian plays once a week with his coach, Landonio, usually on the faster, indoor courts.
“(That’s) where I can show my best qualities,” he said. “On carpet there’s no time to think, it’s my favourite surface.
“I like to play aggressive. Red clay forces me to play long rallies… but in tennis, honestly, I have little patience.”
Former San Siro team-mate Clarence Seedorf was also present in the game.

Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr turned 64 today – 28th of June – and his biggest birthday gift, yet, will be the Super Eagles edging out Cameroon in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers later this year.
Liverpool senior players, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher were not receptive towards new signings during the 2002/03 season according to former midfielder, Salif Diao.
Portugal’s reward for topping Group A on goal difference is a semi-final against Copa América champions Chile, who finished second in Group B after 1-1 draws against Australia and Germany in FIFA Confederations Cup.
Fernando Santos’ team secured top spot with a convincing 4-0 win over the weakest side in the tournament, New Zealand, who have now lost five matches this month.
Portugal took the lead against Mexico twice in their Confederations Cup opening fixture and looked to have stolen all three points somewhat fortuitously when Southampton right-back Cédric Soares scored his first international goal but Héctor Moreno popped up with a last-gasp leveller for Mexico.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s headed goal gave them a narrow 1-0 win over hosts Russia in their second game before they rounded things off by hammering the Kiwis. All told, things have gone as expected so far for Portugal.
They will play Chile without Raphaël Guerreiro, who limped off against Russia with an expected broken leg. Eliseu has filled in for Guerreiro at left-back in a team that has changed a lot over their three matches so far.
Cristiano Ronaldo has started all three games – and won man of the match awards for all three – but as many as 18 different players have earned starts from Santos.
André Silva and Bernardo Silva should keep their places for the semi-final after fine performances against New Zealand, with William Carvalho and André Gomes at risk of losing out.
Chile, meanwhile, haven’t really lived up to expectations. They won just one of their group games, against Cameroon, and took 82 minutes to break their resolve. They had to come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Australia and were riled by Australia’s physical, high-pressing approach. Santos will have taken note.
While Portugal have a number of exciting young players to choose from, this Chile squad is short of depth with very few emerging talents to inspire great confidence. So far only one player under the age of 27 – defender Paulo Díaz – has started a game for Chile.
All eyes will be on Alexis Sánchez, whose goal against Germany was his 31st this season, and Cristiano Ronaldo, whose penalty against New Zealand was his 55th goal in 54 matches this season.
Sánchez has moved ahead of Marcelo Salas as Chile’s all-time top goalscorer, while Ronaldo is just two short of Pelé’s 77 goals for Brazil.
Whoever has the edge on Wednesday may just decide what is likely to be a tight affair.

Borussia Dortmund’s star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be the latest to make a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League this summer.
Aubameyang has attracted interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, but Tianjin Quanjian are apparently convinced the Gabonese is the player to take them to the next level as they are set to win the race for his signature.
According to German newspaper SportBild, is heading to the Far East after agreeing to pocket wages worth £500,000-a-week.
Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke initially made it clear that the club would not allow their top scorer to leave for less than £63million, but Tianjin chairman Shu Yuhui looks set to table an offer in excess of £70m.
It’s said that new boss Peter Bosz, who left Ajax to replace Thomas Tuchel earlier this month, joined Dortmund under the impression that the Gabonese forward, 28, would not be sticking around for next season.
The Borussia Dortmund star is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe, with Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain all interested.
Tianjin will offer Aubameyang, who scored 31 goals in 32 Bundesliga games this season, an eye-watering £26.5m-a-year salary to make the move to China.
