African Women Champion, Olufunke Oshonaike, will be partnering Cameroun’s Sarah Hanffou in the doubles event of the 2017 ITTF World Championships holding in Dusseldorf, Germany.
According to the rules of ITTF, players from different countries are allowed to pair themselves in the doubles and mixed double events of the global tournament.
Having partnered at the 2015 edition of the championship in Suzhou, China, the duo will again be re-igniting their friendship on table in the German city of Dusseldorf on May 29 to June 5.
For Sarah Hanffou, the 2010 African Women Champion, pairing Oshonaike has been a fulfilling decision in her career particularly considering the experience and pedigree of the Nigerian star.
“Oshonaike have been my good friends and we understand ourselves. It did not take me time to decide to choose her because she is among the best in the world, considering her record as the most successful female table tennis player in Africa having won more laurels than any player. She is a social and very respectful. I look forward to a good outing in Germany,” Hanffou said.
Oshonaike is eagerly looking forward to the tournament with the hope of exceeding her 2015 first round exit in the singles.
Super Eagles and Tianjin TEDA captain, John Mikel Obi, has flown to London for surgery.
The former Chelsea midfielder, has sat out the last three Chinese Super League fixtures because of an abdominal strain and has been ruled out for three weeks, according to a report on sports.enorth.com.cn.
Last month, Mikel Obi underwent a traditional Chinese acupuncture, in a bid to be fit for a CSL clash against Chongqing Dangdai Lifan FC, but he has now grown impatient with local methods and is set to meet one of Europe’s top doctors.
“Mikel has not played in the league for three consecutive weeks as he has returned to the UK to prepare for surgical treatment, which also means that he will miss the next three league games,” the report said.
This makes the 30-year-old a major doubt for the Super Eagles camping in Corsica, France next month.
Mikel Obi has scored once in three Chinese Super League appearances, since joining on a free transfer from Chelsea in January.

The management of Akwa United Football Club has named defender Ariwachukwu Emmanuel Vice Captain of the club.
The announcement was made after the team’s Thursday morning’s training at the training pitch of the Godswill Akpabio international Stadium in Uyo.
Ariwachukwu was the Stand-in Captain for the team in her last three Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL matches against Shooting Stars Sports Club 3SC, Kano Pillars and MFM in which they won all.
The Rock Solid defender replaced former Vice Captain Olufemi Kayode who has been released by the club.
Ariwachukwu who has played 16 out of the team’s 19 matches in the first stanza of the NPFL season will deputised substantive Captain Otobong Effiong who recently returned from injury.

Manchester City and Manchester United were expected to fight themselves for the Premier League this season, given the squads they have, the managers they have, the money they had spend and the expectations put on both of them.
Instead, both are out of the title race and won’t win the FA Cup, and both teams are still yet to qualify for the Champions League. It’s a disappointing season for both, although Mourinho can still win a second trophy in his debut season while Pep Guardiola won’t, not even a tinpot.
But this is Pep Guardiola v José Mourinho, and every game between them is a match to watch. The Manchester Derby has happened twice this season: City won at Old Trafford in the Premier League while United won at home in the EFL Cup, which they eventually conquered in February.
Their third and final meeting this season takes place on tonight at the Etihad Stadium, and if there won’t be any titles decided here, two important things will be up for grabs: a big step towards European qualification, and bragging rights.
After all, this Pep vs. José. One of them has to win.
